In addition to its accustomed practice of developing Project Engineers organically, Haskell currently has immediate openings for experienced candidates who can join the company on that second career rung.
In many cases, the Project Engineers on Haskell’s Packaging team are young professionals shifting their careers into the next gear. They often join Haskell as co-op employees while finishing their degrees, then make the move to full-time employment as Design Engineers I and II, positions in which they hone their skills in packaging system design.
Making the leap to Project Engineer introduces broader responsibility.
“This is the first step of starting to get some project management-type activities,” said Jeremy Triplett, Chief Packaging Systems Integrator. “This incorporates aspects of the project such as running meetings, driving a conversation, owning the design aspect, delegating design activities to designers and co-ops, and reporting up through the engineering manager. They have exposure to the vendors and the suppliers as well as to our customers on a week-to-week basis. They do meeting agendas, meeting minutes, vendor management, decision analysis and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT). They’re starting to work on start-up plans.
“They really have responsibility on the project, visibility on the project, ownership of key parts of the project.”
Successful candidates will have good written and verbal communication skills, the ability to manage resources and an understanding of risk management.
A recently hired Project Engineer came to Haskell with several years of experience, having held previous positions with a transportation consulting company and a manufacturing firm, as well as serving as engineer for a brewery.
“He came in with enough of a skillset that we felt he could hit the ground running as a Project Engineer I,” Triplett said. “He’d worked with the customer side, and he didn’t need a lot of training from a day-to-day working standpoint or a drive standpoint. He just needed to see our process, how we execute projects and our expectations, and he hit the ground running.”
The Packaging team is part of Haskell’s Consumer Packaged Goods Group and serves as a longtime partner to many Fortune 500 companies and some of the world’s leading brands. The list of clients and the magnitude of projects continue to grow by the day.
