Haskell’s Permanent Craft Employee (PCE) program was born from an innovative concept and grew to play a major role in the company’s ability to provide fast, cost-effective and certain project outcomes. Now, Haskell is looking for a person to help elevate that workforce to the next level.

The newly created position of Craft Development Coordinator is designed to improve Haskell’s technical training capacity. The successful candidate will develop curricula and visit crews on active job sites to impart new skills that will grow the PCEs’ knowledge base and expand the company’s ability to serve new and existing clients.

“We're looking for somebody who will go out and train our craft workforce in the field where we self-perform,” said Mike McLauchlan, Director of Technical Training for the Construction Core. “We want to grow those skillsets in our workforce on the jobsite, doing this in real time.”

The PCE program was established in the mid-1970s when the company extended full-time employment and benefits to skilled tradesmen, providing stability to these professionals and elevating project standards. Today, the group numbers more than 200 craftsmen – some selected for their potential, others for their expertise. Ultimately, these individuals become masters in their trades and play a foundational role in the safety, quality, and efficiency of the projects on which they work.

McLauchlan has grown the craft educational curriculum using a variety of easy-to-access electronic interfaces, virtual reality, partnerships with vendors and some boots-on-the-ground interaction.

Recently, Haskell visited three different job sites to train crews in basic pipefitting. PCEs individually viewed several two- to three-minute educational videos delivered via a QR code before Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) conducted hands-on follow-up in three separate lunch-and-learn sessions. One site used this as preparation for follow-on project job tasks.

“That was just on a small scale,” McLauchlan said. “Now, we want to have someone who can go out and do this continuously. Similar to the way the military trains for a deployment, we can train our folks in a specific task or job skill that they’re going to need in the future.”

The position is ideal for an experienced construction professional with excellent communication skills and the ability to travel.

In addition to providing a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment, Haskell operates with the direction of six strategic pillars, the first of which is to “Provide Team Members the BEST Job of Their Lives.” It offers a robust benefits package that includes a 401k match and an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), which creates stock ownership for every full-time team member.

“On top of that, what’s great about the job is that is as you get to go out and see different projects that we're working on and be at the front line of developing that next set of skills in the self-perform area,” McLauchlan said. “I guess the best way to say it is you get to see and be part of the best of what Haskell builds.”
