There are plumbing design jobs, and then there are plumbing design jobs in the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) Group at Haskell, the top-ranked Food & Beverage contractor in the country.

And there is a difference, said Dan Zvara, a Lead Mechanical Engineer with Haskell.

“I think the most attractive thing being a plumbing designer in the CPG world is the diversity of projects we have,” Zvara said. “We're not just doing typical commercial plumbing. We're supporting the process and packaging divisions, designing systems to support their needs so that ultimately our customers can make their products.

“Every project is so unique. We might work on a factory that's making Cheetos and then move to one that's making aluminum cans and then to tobacco. The needs vary so greatly in the CPG world that it just keeps you on your toes and it makes the role of the designer that much more exciting.”

Haskell’s plumbing designers perform detailing and analysis, either independently or under the supervision of a licensed professional working on plumbing and utility design projects. Any number of career paths can lead to the position, Zvara said.

“We’ve had some senior plumbing designers that did work for a decade, or decades, as actual plumbers, then move over to the design side and work their way up the design ladder,” he said. “We had some who went to technical school to learn the software programs who we hired out of there and then really learned plumbing design while at Haskell and have worked their way up the ladder. We have some that have worked in fire protection that have shifted over. The backgrounds can vary in time to fill this role.”

In this case, the CPG team is seeking a plumbing designer who has been working in industrial settings for 10 years or more.

“If you've been designing warehouses with some break areas and some hose bibs here and there, this would be diving head-first into something much more complex and exciting,” Zvara said. “You’re able to work directly with the owner and with the process and packaging teams to support their needs so that the owner, at the end of the day, can make their product. That’s much more exciting in my mind than a standard plumbing designer would encounter.”

In addition to providing a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment, Haskell operates with the direction of six strategic pillars, the first of which is to “Provide Team Members the BEST Job of Their Lives.” It offers a robust benefits plan that includes a 401k match and an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), which creates stock ownership for every full-time team member.

Haskell serves CPG clients throughout the United States, and the successful applicant can base in any of its three Regional Operations Centers – Jacksonville, Florida; Dallas, Texas; or Salt Lake City, Utah. The position features some travel, typically for site observations, punch lists and owner’s meetings.

“We’re looking for someone who can dive in head-first,” Zvara said. “We have a lot of projects on our plate right now, and we have a lot coming down the pipeline.”
