The consumer goods industry is incredibly diverse, and Haskell understands that every business has a unique set of needs. No project is too ambitious or complex for Haskell’s Consumer Products Division, and no business is too small to benefit from the team’s wealth of processing, packaging, material handling and infrastructure expertise.

The Consumer Products Division is the second-largest market in Haskell’s Consumer Packaged Goods delivery group. Haskell created the stand-alone Division five years ago to handle all work related to the manufacturing of any product that isn’t edible.

“In a market segment that varied, there’s tremendous value in offering a broad suite of services for clients of all sizes,” said Erik Lightner, Haskell’s leader of the Consumer Products Division. The division’s portfolio features everything from ambitious design-build projects for multinational powerhouses like Nike, which hired Haskell to build a 1.1 million-square-foot distribution center, to single-phase projects for private companies, such as an Ohio-based manufacturer that sells recyclable packaging to wineries.

“We want to appeal to a diverse group of clients,” Lightner said. “We're versatile. If you create a heat map of the types of projects we deliver, we are nimble enough to execute anything from the basic to very complex, and from the small to the very large. When it comes to facilities, processing and packaging, we can do all of those pieces or some of the pieces.”

Advantages of a One-Stop Shop

Indeed, Haskell is among the industry’s most capable in delivering single-source Engineer Procure Construct (EPC) solutions. Haskell can serve as a one-stop shop for designing and overseeing complex projects, such as new construction of turnkey manufacturing, packaging and distribution facilities.

The company’s team of engineers and construction experts can handle every aspect of a project, from designing solutions to vexing manufacturing and supply-chain challenges to comprehensive project management and commissioning and integration support. Haskell is able to leverage the deep in-house expertise that it’s developed through working in an array of industries, and it has a best-in-class reputation for project execution and delivering clients certainty in outcomes, Lightner said.

“I'd say what differentiates us is our speed of execution because of our vast experience in integrated project delivery,” he said. “At the end of the day, we manage all aspects of projects, including safety, quality and startup while ultimately managing risk. We put a lot of thought into how we design and execute a project that will mitigate potential risks or potholes for clients.”

As manufacturers look for new ways to stay agile and lean, some are moving away from new construction in favor of leasing existing warehouses and modifying to suit. Haskell, which employs many industry veterans from consumer product companies with backgrounds in operations and supply chain, has provided clients with solutions custom made for their business while avoiding the costs of brick-and-mortar construction.

“We can come into an existing facility or a warehouse to master-plan and implement changes to infrastructure, product flows and utilities, to support new or additional manufacturing processes while optimizing Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP),” Lightner said.

Building Relationships

In all that it does, Haskell is guided by its core values of Team, Excellence, Service and Trust, and nowhere is that more important than in its client relationships. From the initial contact with a client, all the way through project execution and post-project follow-up, all decisions, actions and behaviors adhere to those values. It is ultimately what sets Haskell apart.

Haskell understands the importance of building strong relationships and developing trust with its clients. That trust is essential during the design and construction process. Each new project brings the opportunity to build or deepen a lasting client relationship.

“Every project is important and critical to the success of one of our clients, which means it’s also important to us,” Lightner said.

To the client, no matter how large or small the project, it is a significant investment. From the early stages of project development through design, the project is just a vision. Haskell’s responsibility is to deliver on that vision.

“There are times when a client engages with us with mission-critical capital projects without a strong relationship in place forged through experience,” Lightner said. “Many relationships start small and grow over time. The relationship starts in the early stages of conceptualization. Clients leverage our expertise to deliver on a complex business solution that includes potential business interruptions, critical supply-chain decision and lifecycles analysis. We delight in helping our clients and delivering customized solutions.”

Regardless of the size of a project or client, Lightner said, “Haskell approaches every aspect of its work with a client-focused mindset.”

“Even when we look at people to hire or promote, a lot of our decision making is based on how successful they have been interacting with clients,” Lightner said. “Our objective and focus as a team is to provide our clients with a world-class experience. We take ownership of their business goals and let that be our North Star to guide how we deliver a successful project to them.”
