With business growing and its demand for steel at an all-time high, Haskell is seeking to add welders to its steel fabrication operation. But more than filling openings, it is seeking to bring in new team members.
“The thing they need to understand is that our people are not just a commodity for us,” said Steve Gibson, Director of Haskell Steel. “I think in some of the local shops, the labor is casual labor, so they come in when needed, they’re worked hard while they're there, and they’re let go when they aren’t needed anymore.
“In our shop, they’re full-time team members with opportunities for overtime. Right now, welders are coming in at about $18.50 or $19 an hour, and 30 days in they get the same benefits that everyone in the company gets.”
The list of those benefits goes on and on. In addition to producing structural components for its projects of its own and those of others, the operation also is adding a miscellaneous shop to create standardized components, such as stairs and guardrails.
Experienced applicants are welcomed, as are those new to the field.
“The thing is, we can bring we can bring someone in as a trainee, and if they have the aptitude and the inclination to learn to be a welder, we can teach them how to be a welder in a pretty short period of time and can actually get them certified,” Gibson said. “It’s a great opportunity for someone looking for a really solid career.”
